Year Three,
Specialized Forest Management
This course includes the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare
students for entry-level jobs in forest management or continuing on
in a related postsecondary program. Students are required to
complete a capstone project where they develop and present a forest
management plan to the owner of a small woodlot. Student groups
interview the owner to determine their management goals for the lot,
collect data from it, and finally develop and present a
management plan based on the goals and data they have gathered.
Curriculum for this option is in the form of teacher planning guides
that include the competencies necessary to complete the management
plan. Planning guides are included that will assist the teacher in
developing lesson plans for:
- determining the land owners goals
- calculating acreage
- reading maps
- verifying ownership
- timber cruising
- identifying land use
characteristics
- developing a cruise report and
erosion/sedimentation plan
- completing a regeneration study
- developing and presenting a
management plan.
Another option, for the more capable
and motivated students, is studying to prepare for college advanced
credit. Self paced, individualized modules have been developed for
use by individuals or small groups of students interested in this
option. For information about these materials
