Year Three, Specialized Timber Harvesting

Year Three, Specialized Timber HarvestingThis course provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary for obtaining an entry-level job in timber harvesting or continuing on in a related postsecondary program. Students are required to complete a capstone project where they develop and carry out a harvesting plan on a small wood lot with the input of the owner. Student groups interview the owner to determine their management goals for the lot, collect data from it, develop and present a contract based on the goals and data they have gathered, and finally gain skill in felling, processing, bucking, and hauling trees.
Curriculum for this course is in the form of teacher planning guides that include the competencies necessary to plan and complete the harvesting operation. Planning guides are included that will assist the teacher in developing lesson plans for:
  • determining the land owners goals
  • developing a cruise report and erosion/sedimentation plan
  • felling and processing trees
  • skidding and bucking felled trees
  • loading and hauling logs
  • performing a cost analysis and determining profit-loss.

Another option, for the more capable and motivated students, is studying to prepare for college advanced credit. Self paced, individualized modules have been developed for use by individuals or small groups of students interested in this option. For information about these materials click here.
